{Day 1} Trimming the Tree

Trimming the tree. It’s important that you begin this process by choosing either a theme or color scheme for your tree. If you choose a particular theme (i.e. hallmark ornaments, Disney theme, ect.) you more than likely will have a wide variety of colors throughout your tree. If you want a particular color scheme, pick one that flows with the colors that you already have established as part of your decor in your home. Once you have determined the look that you are trying to achieve on your tree, you can start the fun part. Trimming your tree! If you do not have a pre-lit artificial tree (like me), stringing the lights on your tree will be your first step. It’s always best to test your light strings prior to hanging them on your tree. Once you have your lights on the tree, you are ready to move on to the next step: hanging garland, ribbon, or netting.

One of my favorite items that I use when trimming my tree is glitter netting. I use the netting like garland throughout my tree. This is my first step that I do once I have prepped my tree for the trimming. After I weave my netting through the tree, it’s time to start hanging the ornaments. You will want to have all your ornaments visible and laid out for this next step. I start with the larger sizes first and work from inside of the tree to the outer. I always keep stepping back and away from the tree to see what spots I might be missing. I’ll be honest, most of my ornaments on my tree are not very expensive. I buy a majority of the balls (or “fillers”) at either Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Hobby Lobby, or Walmart. By “fillers”, I mean different sizes and colors (within my color scheme) of balls. I leave the tips of the branches for the “nicer” ornaments (or icicle-shaped ornaments) and the ones I want to “showcase”. The color scheme for my tree is silver and gold and by using different shades and textures of each color, it will give your tree the dimension it needs. Also, it’s good to have a variety of finishes, such as matte and glossy, and not just one type. The final step for me when I am decorating my tree is to “fill in” the last areas with floral picks or sprays. By doing so, it will give your tree the finishing touches it needs and give it a fuller-looking appearance. Floral sprays can also be an elegant, alternative to the traditional tree-topper!

Happy Decorating!
